Yank fans were saying over the weekend is that the only reason they were swept is because their starting pitchers were hurt and the Sox can only hit bad pitching. Well, apparently the Sox were out to prove them wrong last night-Tomo Ohka is a bad pitcher (ERA> 7.00 heading into the game), and they didn't hit a lick off him.
Rematch of Halladay vs Tavarez tonight. Who wants to bet Halladay doesn't come out until he's good and ready this time?
In baseball-related events, I heard on the news last night that David Halberstam died in a car wreck yesterday at the age of 73. That makes me so sad. A searing critic of the Vietnam War early in his career, Halberstam was also a sports enthusiast and astute chronicler of some of the greatest moments and minds in pro sports. He seemed especially fond of narrating New England sports history. His "Summer of '49" remains one of the definitive classics for any student of the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry, and his 2003 "Teammates: Portrait of a Friendship" a touching look back to the last days of the great Ted Williams, and the stories and efforts of his closest friends on the Red Sox to be there for him. His last book, 2005's "Education of a Coach" was a tribute to the enigmatic genius of everybody's favorite man in the hoodie, Bill Belichick. I've read these books and several more of his and always found Halberstam very detailed, entertaining and informative (photo lifted from wikipedia)
Johnny Pesky, one of the men whose lives were chronicled in "Teammates," reacted sadly to Halberstam's death yesterday. You can read about it here.
RIP, David. You'll be missed.
