Wow. That was fun. Not at all what I expected, but fun nonetheless.
Does anybody else want to tell me that Josh Beckett is overrated? That those 20 wins are all based on run support? No. I didn't think so. You half expect him to whip on a pair of shades and say, "We're on a mission from God" because man, that's how he's pitching. He is going to carry this team or die trying. What more can you ask of a guy? Isn't he starting to have a Brady-esque look about him? It's kind of scary...in a good way, although not if you're the opposition.
I admit, I was not at all confident about the Sox' chances against Sabathia, a guy who had shut them down earlier in the year. But after two shaky postseason games...well, let's just say his stock didn't fall quite as fast as Chien Ming-Wang's but it's sure getting close. The Sox line up absolutely owned him, and he graciously helped out the cause by walking half the park and hitting the rest. Ouch. The guy needs to take a Xanax or something before the next game.
Manny and Papi have been absolute run-producing machines, but it was Bobby Kielty who landed the knockout punch, with a bases-loaded two-run single in the fifth that finally sent Sabathia to the early shower. All kinds of questions about whether or not playing Kielty over Drew was the right thing to do, his success against Sabathia was old, etc., etc., etc...McCarver yapped half an inning about it, it seemed. Well, nobody's saying anything this morning, and any time you can shut up McCarver it's a good thing (although admittedly he's easier to take when the Sox are winning big). Nice job, Bobby.
(The other thing I want to know is...what the hell is going on with the Colorado Rockies? Jesus, did they make some Faustian deal in the clubhouse? This otherworldly pace can't continue...can it? I thought the D'Backs might be able to cool them off a little bit but so far, they haven't. I think the Rockies have the NL pennant, and that's a scary thought for their AL opponent. But they have to come to earth sometime.)
Ok, so now I'm in knots about Carmona. Fausto Carmona is one of the top five best pitchers in the game IMO. He completely shut the Sox down in July and earned some real playoff cajones by doing the same to the Yanks in a bug stampede. Schill will, I think, have to pitch the game of his life if the Sox want to go back to the Jake up 2-zip.
Tonight should be a nail biter...
LET'S GO, SOX!!!!!!!

Last night's game was great, but even so, I experience something very like a heart attack every time I see Eric G. coming out of the bullpen. I know they had a big lead, and Francona wants to boost his confidence, but the post-season hardly seems like the right time for experiments in confidence building. If his head isn't straight, then he's a liability (a la whats-his-name of old, Matt Young (?)) and he shouldn't be on the roster.

Matt Young. Now there's a name I haven't heard in a while.
Eric Gagne makes me want to eat glass...but as long as the Sox win the game, it's all good. That's all that matters right now. Rest your best guys for when the game is really on the line...
